Senate Resolution No. 6

Recognizing Glenville State College on its one hundred twenty-fifth
anniversary as an educational institution.
Whereas, The West Virginia Legislature passed legislation on
February 19, 1872, establishing the Branch Normal School in the
city of Glenville, West Virginia; and
Whereas, In 1909 the State Board of Regents was established to
oversee Glenville State Normal School; and
Whereas, In 1930 the Legislature gave the school college
status with four-year programs in teacher education and renamed the
institution of Glenville State Teachers College; and
Whereas, Legislative action in 1943 provided for baccalaureate
programs in the liberal arts and the sciences and the name of the
school became Glenville State College; and
Whereas, Glenville State College has met accreditation
standards of the North Central Association of Colleges and
Secondary Schools since 1949 as well as teacher education
accreditation standards for sixty consecutive years; and
Whereas, Glenville State College serves the needs of the
people of central West Virginia; and
Whereas, The Ccollege consistently meets the needs of a
changing world and the challenge of new technology. Glenville
State College honors its rich heritage and celebrates its future
with a tradition of excellence; therefore, be it
Resolved by the Senate:
That the Senate hereby recognizes Glenville State College on
its one hundred twenty-fifth anniversary as an educational
institution and further recognizes its outstanding contribution to
the citizens of West Virginia through its educational excellence;
and, be it
Further Resolved, That the Senate joins in the celebration of
this outstanding institution as it celebrates Glenville State
College Day on WednesdayThursday, February 19, 1997; and, be it
Further Resolved, That the Clerk is hereby directed to forward
a copy of this resolution to the president of Glenville State
Ccollege.
